3 Ways to Lower Your Summer Energy Bill

With summer fast approaching, so does a time that most homeowner’s dread: the season of increased energy bills.

After all, the need for a working air conditioner rises quickly as the temperatures go up, creating more usage of your HVAC system, and more money spent on your utilities.

However, there are certain things that you can do to help lower your energy bill this summer. Before it’s too late, take these steps and get your home ready to be as comfortable as possible without having to break the bank to do it.

1. Know the Right Temperature

You may be tempted to crank the thermostat to as cool as you possibly can for as long as you need. However, that will put you in the fast lane to a high energy bill--and potentially a worn down system.

Instead, keep your thermostat at a comfortable temperature and if you are leaving the house for an extended period of time, set the temperature even higher. Consider this: for every degree that you raise your thermostat (so from 77°F to 78°F), you can save roughly 4 to 8% on your utility bills.

2. Fix Any Leaks or Drafts You May Have

Be sure to look around your home for cracks in windows, drafts in door jams, and other areas where you may be losing some of your indoor air.

Leaks and drafts can let in the hot summer air from outside and release the cool air you are trying to keep in your home. This makes it so your AC system has to work harder to reach your desired temperature which means, you guessed it, more energy used.

3. Consider the Right Blinds, Curtains, or Drapes

If you’re in an area where the summer sun can beat down on your home and in your windows, you will find yourself fighting an uphill battle with keeping everything cool. That is, unless you get some blinds, curtains, or drapes that can block out some of those rays.

These can close out a lot of the sun exposure, but still, leave enough to light up your room. You just won’t have to worry about excessive heat gain causing your AC to work harder.
