Why Your Furnace is Blowing Cold Air
One of the most common problems we encounter during the heating season is with gas furnaces blowing cold air. While it can seem quite alarming, fear not! There is often a simple solution to getting your furnace back in good working order. If your furnace is blowing cool air, look into the following to get your furnace running as it should.
Steps to take if your furnace is blowing cold air:
- Check your thermostat: This one may seem obvious, but it’s where even the most skilled HVAC technicians begin. If you find that your furnace is sometimes blowing cold air, it could be that your thermostat fan is set to “on”, prompting your fan to run and blow air even when the heat isn’t running. The solution is simple – set your thermostat to “auto” so that the fan will only be activated when your heat is on and your furnace will only blow warm air.
- Check air filters: Dirty air filters can cause your furnace to run less efficiently, and eventually overheat. When this happens, the limit switch within your system, which is a key component of your furnace’s safety device, will turn the furnace burners off to protect your system. If it’s been a while since you’ve changed the air filters in your system, this could likely be the issue. Try replacing air filters and turning your heat back on to see if this helps.
- Check the pilot light: If your furnace is constantly blowing cold air, it’s possible that your pilot light has gone off. It may be that the light simply needs to be relit.
